How to Choose an Ethical Standard Poodle Breeder (What We Do at LoEll’s)

Choosing a Standard Poodle breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a puppy into your family. A well bred Standard Poodle should be healthy, stable in temperament, and raised with intention, not just produced for profit.
At LoEll’s Standard Poodles, we believe education is key. Here are some important things every puppy buyer should look for when choosing a breeder, and how our program is designed to meet those standards.
1. Health Testing — Not Just Vet Checks
Responsible Standard Poodle breeders perform breed specific health testing, not just routine veterinary exams. This may include:
  • OFA hip and elbow evaluations
  • Eye clearances
  • Cardiac clearances
  • Genetic testing for conditions such as PRA and DM
These tests help reduce the risk of inherited diseases and protect the long term health of the puppies.
At LoEll’s, our breeding dogs are health tested according to breed recommendations, and we are happy to discuss our results with prospective families.
2. Temperament Matters Just as Much as Looks
Standard Poodles should be:
  • Intelligent
  • People oriented
  • Stable and confident
  • Suitable for family life
Ethical breeders carefully select dogs not only for structure and health, but also for temperament. This helps ensure puppies grow into dogs that are a joy to live with.
Our program focuses on producing Standard Poodles that are well balanced, affectionate, and suitable for active families and companion homes.
3. Puppy Raising Practices Make a Huge Difference
How a puppy is raised in the first 8 weeks can shape their confidence for life. Responsible breeders focus on:
  • Early neurological stimulation/ early scent introduction
  • Noise desensitization
  • Exposure to normal household sounds
  • Introduction to different surfaces and textures
  • Interactions with different animals
  • Monitoring health and nutrition
  • Gentle handling and socialization
  • Early grooming exposure
  • Clean, enriched environments
At LoEll’s, our puppies are raised with intentional socialization to help them transition smoothly into their new homes.
4. Transparency & Ongoing Support
A good breeder will:
  • Answer your questions honestly
  • Provide contracts and health guarantees
  • Offer guidance after your puppy goes home
  • Care about where their puppies are placed
We consider ourselves a lifelong resource for our puppy families and are always happy to offer support, advice, and guidance.
5. Red Flags to Watch Out For
Be cautious of breeders who:
  • Constantly has 4+ litters at a time
  • Cannot provide health testing proof
  • Will not allow questions
  • Focus only on price
  • Sells puppies without vetting homes
  • Will not provide references
  • Lacks knowledge on the breeds health, temperament, etc.
  • Talk negatively about other breeders
  • No contract, no health guarantee, extremely vague paperwork
  • Allows puppies to leave before 8 weeks old
Finding the right breeder may take time, but it’s worth it for a healthy, well raised Standard Poodle.
